I read an article today about Kim Hyun Joong's donation back in March 2011 when a big earthquake hit Japan. The article was written by Reporter Ga-yi Yoon of OSEN on 03/23/2012. Link: http://news.nate.com/view/20120323n12909

The reporter starts out describing the dire situation Japan was in right after the disaster. Further, the reporter recalls clearly how many Hallyu celebrities such as Bae Yong-joon, Lee Byung-hun, Chae Ji-woo among others "rolled up their sleeves" to help the victims in Japan.

The reporter were often asked by some celebrities on how to go about helping the victims in regards to the amount of donation and different methods of aid, etc. According to this reporter, these Hallyu stars (didn't name them in the article) wanted to help but were concerned with how their support and donations would be viewed by people. Would their sincerity be received without being misconstrued? They were a bit nervous whether their big donations would cause some discomfort in both Korea and Japan or not. Witnessing this dilemma, the reporter thought that it was not easy to be a Hallyu star when doing good deeds and donating over 6 figure donations could cause such concerns.

It was around that time that the reporter had a meal with Kim Hyun Joong's manager when he suddenly mentioned, "Hyun Joong is someone I can learn a great deal from." This was 6 months after Kim Hyun Joong had moved to Keyeast. It was safe to say that the people in Keyeast were still learning about Kim Hyun Joong little by little.

The reporter still thought of Kim Hyun Joong as a young man, and how could there be that much to learn from someone so young? That's when the manager talked about Kim Hyun Joong's donation and how it had come about.

At the time, the manager couldn't help himself but be taken aback by the fact that a young star, only in his twenties, could have made a decision on his own, in donating such a large sum of money. It wasn't just because of his large donation but because the manager saw the sincerity in Kim Hyun Joong's decision to donate and that Kim Hyun Joong had been able to carry out a good deed that came straight from his heart. And, that's where the manager saw the merit of the "person" Kim Hyun Joong. No one around him had suggested donating. Knowing Kim Kyun Joong, he was not the type to be pushed into doing something just because people suggested.

I still remember that Kim Hyun Joong was the first Hallu star to donate, and as soon as he did, other Hallyu stars ensued in his footsteps. After reading the article, my respect for Kim Hyun Joong has gone up to a different level. I've always known that he is what he is., a caring, humble, and genuine person However, it's good to hear from others as well. The bottom line, you the man!!! [OSEN=윤가이 기자] 지난 해 이맘때 쯤 일이다. 2011년 3월, 이웃나라 일본에 사상 최악의 대지진이 일어나 많은 이들이 고통 받고 있던 때였다. 하루가 멀다 하고 피해 지역의 참상이 실시간 뉴스로 전해지고 있었다. 많은 일본 국민들이 삶의 터전을 잃었을 뿐 아니라 기본적인 생필품 아니, 식수조차 구하지 못해 발을 구르던 중이다. 


당시 배용준 이병헌 장근석 최지우 등 많은 한류스타들이 팔을 걷어붙이고 나섰던 기억이 생생하다. 실명을 언급하긴 그렇지만 몇몇 한류스타의 소속사 관계자들이 일본 지진 피해 성금을 기부하기 위해 계획을 세우는 과정에서 내게 종종 말을 걸어왔다. 그들은 액수나 방법, 방식 등에 대한 문제를 고민하고 있었다. 분명 돕고 싶은 마음은 가득한데 과연 이 상황에서 이러한 진심들이 제대로 전달될 수 있겠느냐는 걱정들이었다. 혹시나 국내에서, 혹은 일본에서조차 이들이 거액의 성금을 내놓는 것에 대해 불편하게 생각하지는 않을지 신경이 쓰이는 듯 했다. 억 단위의 기부금을 내놓고 착한 일을 하는 데도 눈치를 봐야 하는 그들을 보며 역시 톱스타, 한류스타란 자리는 결코 싶지 않은 자리구나 싶더라. 


그즈음 어느 날, 김현중의 매니저와 식사를 하며 수다를 떠는데 그가 대뜸 "현중이는 참 배울 게 많은 친구야" 하는 거다. 김현중이 소속사 키이스트와 전속 계약을 한지 반년 정도 밖에 지나지 않았을 때다. 소속사 식구들 역시 아티스트로서 뿐 아니라 인간 김현중에 대해 새록새록 알아가던 시기였던 셈. 


아무리 정상의 스타라지만 나이로 봐선 한참 어린 친구에게 무엇을 그렇게 배웠는고 하니 바로 지진 성금 얘기가 나온다. 당시는 김현중이 컴백을 앞두고 한창 녹음 작업과 댄스 연습에 매진할 때다. 늦은 밤 녹음 상황을 체크하려고 들렀다가 그를 만났는데 너무도 진지하게 일본 지진 피해를 걱정하더라는 것. "내가 할 수 있는 게 없을까?", "제일 도움이 되는 게 무엇일까", "무엇이 제일 필요할까"라며 전전긍긍하더라는 거다. 그날 밤 내내 그 얘기만 하던 그는 결국 자비 1억 원을 성금으로 쾌척했다.
